The Giants’ first competitive fixture is almost upon us, and it’s a challenge cup tie away at Hunslet RLFC.
Some of us will remember the last time Huddersfield met Hunslet, if you don’t then let us remind you.
February 9th, 2003, so exactly 22 years to the day we face them on Sunday, again, a challenge cup tie, and as will be the case on Sunday, Giants will be massive favourites.
Back in 2003, we had just won promotion back to Super League from what was the called the Northern Ford Premiership, today’s equivalent of the Championship, going the entire league season unbeaten in the league, winning the NFP Grand Final and also the Buddies (League cup) and losing only once in all competitions, ironically, in the Challenge Cup at Doncaster.
We had played Hunslet 3 times in 2002, winning handsomely by 68-6 and 40-0 in the league and by 60-4 in the Buddies cup, another easy win on the cards then in the cup game the next season then?
Not quite! Hunslet overturned the massive odds and created one of the biggest shocks in the cup by beating the Giants 18-14, some say Huddersfield were over confident and turned up with the wrong attitude, but Hunslet were very good on the day and on a heavy pitch produced a splendid performance.
We need to make sure we are in the right frame of mind this Sunday or there could be a repeat!
But what about the game?
